If you’re ever passing through Normandy and, in particular, the city of Le Havre, staying at the NOMAD Hotel perhaps, you can make the most of the opportunity to explore a revolutionary movement in the world of art: Impressionism.

LANDSCAPES AND EMOTIONS

A movement born at the start of the 19th Century, Impressionism’s roots lie in the works of Monet and his canvas « Impression, rising sun », which gave the movement its name. This famous tableau centres upon the industrial landscape of Le Havre at that time, as do many other Impressionist works. As its name suggests, this movement centred around works that depict impressions captured at a precise moment in time, playing particularly with the light and the ephemeral nature of the weather.

Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Millet, Degas, Renoir, Boudin, Pissarro…Countless artists have drawn inspiration from the Normandy landscape. Besides, Le Havre was not only painted by the Impressionists! Fauvism, characterised by marked contours and bright colours, also relied upon Normandy for inspiration. Thanks to the “Le Havre Impressionniste et Fauve” app, you can follow in the brushstrokes of these famous painters of the Modern Art world and learn more about their works.
